BRCGS Issue 9 — automated audit with Rela AI
How Rela AI covers BRCGS Issue 9 critical clauses (HACCP, operations control, records) with real-time PLC monitoring and auditable reports.
A €15M Italian bakery should not spend the weekend before the BRCGS audit printing forms. With real-time monitoring and immutable records, the audit becomes an export — not a drama.
What is BRCGS Issue 9?
BRCGS Global Standard for Food Safety Issue 9 was published in August 2022 and came into force on 1 February 2023. It is one of the most demanded GFSI (Global Food Safety Initiative) standards by UK and European retailers for private-label supply.
Key changes vs Issue 8:
- Reinforced focus on food safety culture (clause 1.1.2)
- Expanded traceability and authenticity
- Greater scrutiny on suppliers and outsourced services
- Dual audit (announced + unannounced) as recommended practice
- Digital risks (cybersecurity, food fraud)
Critical clauses Rela AI covers
| Clause | Topic | How Rela AI contributes |
|---|---|---|
| 1.1.1 | Senior leadership commitment | Automated executive reports per plant, week and product. Zero-paper visibility. |
| 2.10 | HACCP / Food Safety Plan | CCPs configured by AI, sub-second PLC monitoring, immutable deviation history. |
| 3.2 | Internal audits | Traceability of events / deviations / corrective actions exportable to PDF and CSV. |
| 3.7 | Corrective and preventive action | Each HACCP deviation auto-generates a work order with root cause, affected lot, preventive action. |
| 4.7 | Site and equipment maintenance | Predictive + preventive maintenance logged per asset, aligned to the HACCP plan. |
| 5.3 | Foreign body and contamination control | Digital inspections with photo/electronic signature, linked to the lot. |
| 6.1 | Operations control | Real-time OEE from PLC, recipe records and process control. |
| 6.2 | Labelling and packaging control | Lot traceability (when, where, on which line) auditable. |

Rela-->>QC: Sub-second temperature/humidity curve plus alerts
QC->>Aud: Done, no deviation above limitThe auditor moves from reviewing stained paper forms to reading dashboards and verified exports with immutable timestamps and cryptographic signatures.
Product disposition and lot traceability
BRCGS Issue 9 clauses 3.7 and 5.4 require a documented process when a critical deviation happens:
- Affected lot identification — Rela AI already knows which lot was in production at the time of the deviation (recipe + timestamp).
- Disposition decision — quarantine, rework, destroy. Logged with QC electronic signature.
- Root cause — 5-why or fishbone analysis linked to the event.
- Preventive action — what changes to avoid repeats.
- Effectiveness verification — review date and result.
The whole chain lives in the Plant OS asset graph, linked to lot, equipment, shift and operator. The auditor can start from any link and reconstruct the full chain.
Food safety culture (clause 1.1.2)
BRCGS Issue 9 put explicit focus on culture, not just processes. Rela AI contributes:
- Permanent visibility for the operator: when a deviation happens, the operator sees it on WhatsApp in their language. It is not an end-of-shift email from the boss.
- Explicit approvals: every corrective action goes through documented human approval — the system does not decide alone, it proposes.
- Accessible reports: no "I know what's happening, I'll let you know" — every stakeholder sees the same state.
Documented use cases
- Italian bakery — proofer chamber fleet (Modbus + VPN) — COLIP anchor case
- HACCP in industrial bakery
- Cold chain in bakery
How to prepare for the next audit
- Configure your CCPs in Rela AI — use the conversational AI to describe them in natural language ("monitor LIE-A between 24-28°C, alert if out of range more than 4 minutes").
- Connect the relevant PLCs — a single VPN tunnel covers multiple brands (Carel, Schneider, Siemens, Allen-Bradley).
- Define corrective action plan per CCP — Rela AI suggests templates; your QC approves.
- Enable the BRCGS report — auto-generated monthly, exportable to PDF.
- Pre-audit simulation — review 2 weeks ahead with the auto-report to catch any unaddressed deviation.
Honest limitations
Rela AI is a monitoring tool, it does not replace:
- The HACCP plan signed by a qualified human QC.
- The BRCGS certification by the external auditor (still on-site).
- The final lot disposition decision, which requires a human signature.
What it does: give you the data, records and traceability so that signature is defensible and the audit ends in hours, not days.
